Slouching Towards Mecca: American Liberalism Bows Eastward | Print |
Friday, 24 April 2009 00:00

Just over a decade ago, Supreme Court justice nominee Robert Bork wrote a book entitled Slouching Towards Gomorrah:  Modern Liberalism and American Decline, an eye-opening piece that articulated the dangers of radical liberalism (a redundant term) which interprets much of the Constitution through the lenses of European socialism and United Nations morality (an oxymoronic term).

Bork, then portrayed as a cynic, has proven to be a prophet among false prophets.  But even Bork must be surprised at the rapidity of the hard left turn in American politics over the past four months.   Moreover, Judge Bork could not have predicted the swashbuckling friendship Western liberals initiated with militant Islamic groups.  That friendship became a marriage 100 days ago through the inauguration of President Barrack Hussein Obama.  Consider the prenuptials that this administration has seemingly signed:

The "war on terror" will be outlawed and then the Department of Homeland Security will overtly attack veterans as one of the greatest dangers to our safety.

  •  Christian symbols must be removed at Georgetown University during a presidential address but bowing to a Saudi king will be encouraged (I know, Obama claims ignorance; after all, what would a man who was trained in Saudi schools know about Saudi protocol?)
  •  Israel, the only democracy in that part of the world, must capitulate to countless Palestinian redresses while Hamas, the kinder and gentler version of Al Qaeda, is now considered a legitimate political party and encouraged to take part in the "solution."

To many, this marriage is inexplicable.  What does San Francisco have to do with Mecca? Answer:  they both disdain unfettered freedom.  For example, the common enemy of economic liberalism is capitalism.  Hence the definition:  a liberal is someone who knows how to spend your money well.  Distribution of wealth, not the expansion of wealth, is the goal of the liberal.  Conservatives should be thankful to government that we are allowed to keep any of our money, especially since it is, according to one liberal pundit, our "patriotic duty" to pay our taxes.  Nancy Pelosi dreams of the day she can have as much control over our lives as King Abdullah has over the lives of twenty-seven million Saudis.

Liberals and Muslims also require rules of others that do not apply to them.  With the advent of Earth Day this week (the liberal replacement of Easter), we are to bow to the god of global warming (termed "climate change" for moderates who wish to buy into this façade) while Pelosi flies around on her own private jet.  Likewise, Muslims demand religious freedom in America while advocating persecution in other countries.  I wonder if CAIR (Council on American Islamic Relations), which this week issued a report notifying the FBI that their mosques are "off limits" to investigation, will declare the same rights for Christians and Jews in Pakistan or other "allies" of America?

We are incrementally slouching towards Mecca, a path away from the virtues of Thomas Jefferson, based in Judeo-Christian principles, and towards the vices of Muhammad.  We have to remember that although liberals will never give up their own rights, they have little problem giving up the rights of others if it advances their causes.  And that alone, if left undeterred, could lead to the demise of freedoms we have fought so long to secure.
